The residents of Croix-Rousse are very attached to their neighborhood, often describing it as their village. Historically, Croix-Rousse was independent and only joined Lyon in 1852. This separation from the city still lingers in the minds of its people. Known for its bohemian, festive, and urban lifestyle, the neighborhood is lively day and night, with its market, small shops, trendy cafés, and numerous traditional Lyonnaise "bouchons."
At the end of the Boulevard de la Croix-Rousse stands the famous "Gros Caillou," a symbol of the neighborhood, discovered in 1861 during the construction of the Croix-Rousse funicular. Another emblem is the Mur Peint des Canuts, a 1,200 m² fresco depicting Croix-Rousse and its inhabitants.
